Hi there

I went to the archvies before classes yesterday, and struch lucky first
time: Henri Ulysse belongs to the Huguenin-Dumittan branch of the family.

He was born (as you said) on 13 Feb 1844 and christened on 16 Mar 1844 at
La Brévine, a village not far from La Chaux-de-Fonds. He married in 1871
(exact date not given) at Le Locle, a nearby small town.

His parents were Henri-Frédéric Huguenin du Mittan and Julie-Adèle
Courvoisier-Piot, daghter of Simon-Frédéric. Henri-Frédéric was born on 7
June 1816 at La Chaux-du-Milieu, and was the 6th of 8 children. (No
marriage date yet.)

Henri-Frédéric's parents were Charles-Auguste Huguenin du Mittan and Louise
Dubois, illegitimate daughter of Rose Madelaine Dubois. (Her father's
surname was possibly Jeaneret; no marriage date yet.) Charles-Auguste was
born on 29 Oct 1792 at La Chaux-du-Milieu, and was the 5th of 7 children.
Louise died before 1st Oct 1837, when Charles-Auguste remarried at Les
Ponts-de-Martel with Augustine Jeannin, daughter of Jérémie. They had at
least 2 more children.

Charles-Auguste's parents were Daniel Huguenin du Mitan and Jeanne Marie
Huguenin dit Richard, married on 10 Sept 1768 at La Chaux-du-Milieu. I
have no dates of birth for either of these, but hope to find them. Jeanne
Marie's parents were
Pierre Huguenin dit Richard and Susanne Marie Courvoisier, married at Le
Locle on 26 Feb 1746. I have dates of birth for Jeanne Marie's 3 brothers:
there is also at least one reference where her name is given as Anne Marie,
just to make life more interesting... Pierre's father was called David,
and the Huguenin-Richard branch are all descendants of Richard Huguenin and
his wife, Othenet Mathey dict Junod.

Daniel Huguenin du Mitan was the son of Moyse Huguenin du Mitan and Marie
Matthey (daughter of Daniel), and he had at least 2 brothers.

Moyse's parents were Moïse Huguenin du Mitan and Susanne Jacot-Gindre, and
he had at least 4 brothers and sisters. He died before 1762.

Moïse was the son of Pierret Huguenin du Mitan, and had 6 known brothers
and sisters.

Pierret was born before 1600, and died sometime after 1659. He had 6 known
brothers and sisters. His parents were Blaise Huguenin du Mitan and
Jaquette Montandon (daughter of Jaques Montandon and Blaiza Courvoisier).

Blaise was born before 1552 and died between 1598 and 1600. He was a
small-scale farmer, working his own land. His father was Petitjehan
Huguenin, and his mother's first name was Jehanne.

Petitjehan ("Little John") was also a labourer on his own land, who died
before 1552. He had 7 known children, most of whom settled at the village
known today as La Chaux-du-Milieu. In the local patois, it was then called
La Chaux du Moitan or Mitan, and the descendants of 4 of Petitjehan's
children became known as Huguenin du Mitan (today written
Huguenin-Dumittan). Another of Petitjehan's children was Richard Huguenin,
ancestor of the Huguenin-Richard branch.

Petitjehan was the son of Hugonin Heuguenin (various spellings found!), a
labourer and woodcutter who was born before 1507, and died after 1533. He
was already an adult in 1507, and when he swore fealty for his land, he was
described as a
"homme franc et libre du seigneur de Valangin" - a free man under the lord
of Valangin.

Hugonin's father was Outhenyn chiez Heuguenin, first referred to as an
adult in a document dated 1473. In 1507 he was described as old and
feeble. He is the founder of the Huguenin family, and now has descendants
all over the world....

Hope this is of interest - if you use a genealogy program, I can send you
fuller details: we use Family Tree Maker, but can also generate GEDCOM
files. I can also try and dig out more info using parish registers now I
know where to look.

All the best

Sarah
