Who is this man? That was the question I asked in 2002. It now appears that he probably is
Louis, a brother of
Ulysse Huguenin.
The remainder of this note is esstential as I wrote it in 2002.
The name above appears on line six of page 11 of the 1880 US Census for Branch Township of
Marion Co., KS (1),
just a few lines above the
Ulysse Huguenin family.
The surname on line six appears to be spelled "Huguinan", whereas
Ulysse's surname (line 20) appears to be "Huguenan." The given name on
line six appears to be spelled "L...sa." The images of this census
page suggest that this census taker was quite careful about dotting
the letter "i." So the two dots above the given name may indicate two
"i's" in the name, or they may be specks on the microfilm reader!

Line six states that L... is a single, white, male, farm
laborer who was 32 years old on 1880 Jun 1, and that he and both of
his parents were born in Switzerland. Lines 4-5 state that he was
living with 60 year old Morgan Young and his 50-something year old
wife Hanner. Perhaps this indicates that he was living with them as a
hired hand or simply helping this older couple in some way.
The top of the census page seems to indicate that
all information on the page was recorded on the same day,
1880 June 18. This would indicate that L... probably lived fairly
close to the Ulysse Huguenin family, at least within a day's travel time.
Taking all of this census information together, it is easy to speculate
that L... and Ulysse were related.
Ulysse, his wife Eugenie, and L... are recorded
as being about the same age. Henri Ulysse is 36, and both
Eugenie and L... are 32 (on 1880 June 1). Ulysse is
recorded as a "farmer" whereas L... is recorded as a "farm laborer", and
the census taker regularly distinguishes between those two occupations.
Perhaps this distinction simply means that Ulysse was regarded as
the head of household, whereas L... was not.
