Mar - Eckert, Mauchly create Electronic Computer Company

summer - Moore School Lectures - Mauchly is lecturing on sorting and collating

Oct - Contract to build EDVAC type machine for US Census Bureau

1947

spring - Cenusu Bureau machine officially names UNIVAC (UNIVersal Automatic Computer)

- intended to use magnetic tape storage

- need to build tape handling equipment.

Oct - contract to build BINAC for Northrup - small airborne computer

End - incorporate as Eckert-Mauchly Computer Corp (EMCC) to obtain investment capital

1948

Aug - American Totalisator buys 40% of EMCC

1949

Nov - BINAC shipped to Northrup.
-first American stored-program comptuer
-unreliable

- American Totalisator pulls out financially

1950

early - Eckert and Mauchly approach IBM for financing

??- Remington Rand approaches EMCC (with Gen. Leslie R. Groves in charge of R&D)
- EMCC becomes a wholly owned subsidiary of Remington Rand
- Rand learns that UNIVAC is seriously under priced

1951

UNIVAC begins to function as a computer

Mar - UNIVAC runs it acceptance tests for Census Bureau.

1952

Nov - UNIVAC predicts Eisenhower/Stevenson presidential election on CBS with Walter Cronkite and a mock-up computer

?? - Acquires Engineering Research Associates (ERA) to build it first scientific computer

1955

Remington Rand merges with Sperry Gyroscope to become Sperry Rand
