Navigation Gilman (2, 151-163) describes some of the techniques of Lewis and Clark in their journey from St. Louis to the Pacific in the early 1800's.

This subject is so huge that I wonder how in the world to do anything useful with it. However, this is where computing meets humanity, and therefore, it probably is one of the most important parts of the history of computing. So let the collection of notes begin, and let's see where it leads.
